Internet Battery Backup (Reliability Plus Feature)

In this article, you’ll learn about GFiber’s Internet Battery Backup in general, including how it works, how to purchase it, and other helpful details.

How it Works

GFiber uses light rather than electrical impulses to deliver internet, making the fiber network itself highly reliable during power outages. However, your router and Fiber Jack still require electricity to function.

The Internet Battery Backup (a Reliability Plus feature) automatically kicks in during a power outage to provide up to 2 hours of full-bandwidth uptime with no internet slowdowns.1

Important Note: The battery backup only powers your primary internet connection (router and Fiber Jack). It will not power your Mesh Extenders, meaning they will go offline unless you have a separate backup power source for them. It also may not function during widespread outages that affect centralized networking facilities.

Installation Process

GFiber requires professional installation for this device.

  • New Customers: Schedule your installation appointment during service signup.

  • Existing Customers: After upgrading your plan and opting into the backup, you will be prompted to schedule a technician visit.

Setup Verification (Testing the Backup)

Once installed, the device works automatically. However, you can verify it is running correctly using these steps:

  1. Check Cables: Ensure the battery is connected to its power supply unit. You should have one power cable running from the wall to the power supply, and another cable with two connectors attached to your router and Fiber Jack.

  2. Verify Power: Check that the lights on your router and Fiber Jack are on. (Note: There is a physical power button on the bottom of the Fiber Jack if it needs to be turned on manually).

  3. Simulate an Outage: Unplug the AC wall outlet cable from the power supply module for a few seconds. The router and Fiber Jack should remain powered on.

  4. Plug Back In: Reconnect the power cable to the wall so the battery stays fully charged.
